Whole School Programme: The information literacy skills taught at James Hargest are embedded into existing curriculum assessments. Here is a document stating what is taught at each year level and the learning intentions
Information Literacy at James Hargest
Year 8 Information Literacy Unit Work is currently underway on a generic template for all Year 8 classes to use based on a trial of a Myths and Legends unit in Term 4 201o which will incorporate the following skills:

Using the Library Catalogue

Dot Jot Note taking

Variety of sources to gather information
Year 9 English Top Secret Dossier This is a three week which every Year 9 class completes. There are six lessons where the following skills are intentionally taught:
- Using print resources
- Introducing and developing Dot Jot note-taking skills
- Fact-gathering skills
- Creating bibliographies
- Evaluating research process
Teaching Order: This is one page document given to every teacher involved in this unit outlines the order we collaboratively teach these skills.
Year 9 Science – Astronomy This is a two week unit with specific teaching of the following skills:
- Decide on research topic
- Practice Dot Jot note-taking skills
- Develop one open research question
- Use information from notes to create powerpoint to answer questions
- Evaluate websites
Year 10 Social Studies – In Our Backyard This is a three week unit which every Year 10 class completes. There are four lessons where the following skills are intentionally taught:
- Effective use of Search Engines – specifically Google and Sweet Search
- Refresher on how to cite information used for a bibliography, note-taking using Dot Jot Note method, selecting quality resources for research
- Using the Australia/New Zealand Reference Centre database
Year 10 Social Studies – Kiwi Innovators This unit is the replacement unit for our In our Backyard Unit for 2012. this unit is taught in Terms 2 & 3 to all 11 Year 10 classes. There are four lessons where students are taught the following skills, focussing on on-line research skills:
- Evaluating websites
- Using search engines effectively – both Google and Sweet Search
- Using the Biography Resource Centre and Australia/New Zealand Reference Centre Databases
- Refreshing the use of Dot Jot Notes and specifically how to cite online resources
